SBF Welcomes New Political Appointments

To be attributed to Mr Lam Yi Young, Chief Executive Officer, Singapore Business Federation

Friday, 23 April 2021 [Singapore] – The Singapore Business Federation (SBF) welcomes the appointment of Mr Gan Kim Yong, Mr Lawrence Wong, and Mr Tan See Leng as the Minister for Trade & Industry, Minister for Finance, and Minister for Manpower, respectively. All three Ministers are no strangers to SBF and the business community, and we look forward to working closely with them in their new portfolios.

The business community is well familiar with Minister Gan’s and Minister Wong’s work as the Co-Chairs of the Multi-Ministry Taskforce. They provided strong leadership in balancing public health challenges and business needs. This has helped businesses to mitigate the economic impact of the pandemic and to reopen their businesses in a safe manner.

Minister Gan is a seasoned Minister who is not new to economic issues, having been Minister for Manpower from 2008 to 2011. As the Manpower Minister during the Global Financial Crisis in 2009, Minister Gan was instrumental in partnering industries to preserve jobs and step-up productivity. We look forward to his leadership and support for businesses in this next phase of recovery and growth, and in seizing opportunities to emerge stronger.

Minister Wong has been with the Ministry of Finance as Second Minister since 2016 and is familiar with the business community. The business community appreciates Minister Wong’s strong support for businesses through the Budget and look forward to his continued support and partnership in future Budgets.

Since being appointed the Second Minister for Manpower and Second Minister for Trade and Industry in July 2020, Minister Tan has joined in several of SBF’s dialogue sessions with the business community. By now, he is a familiar face to the business community, and we look forward to working with him to strengthen Singapore’s manpower strategies to support companies’ growth.

SBF would also like to thank Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat, Minister Chan Chun Sing, and Minister Josephine Teo for their strong support for SBF and the business community over the years. By availing themselves for many SBF dialogues and events and interacting frequently with business leaders, they helped strengthen the trust and collaboration between the Government and the business community. We look forward to building on this partnership for a stronger economy and a brighter future for Singapore and Singaporeans.
